Last month, three of The Sierra Fund’s staff traveled to Plumas County for the multi-day Sierra Meadows Partnership (SMP) Annual Meeting. Hosted by Plumas Corporation, the workshop brought together land managers, academics, non-profits, tribal groups, consultants, graduate students, and agencies funding meadow restoration.

Specific meeting goals included advancing the Sierra Meadows Strategy, which outlines a plan to protect and restore 30,000 acres of California meadows by 2030; reviewing the current science on greenhouse gas storage potential in mountain meadows; and sharing information on meadow conservation and restoration efforts planned or underway.

As part of the workshop, The Sierra Fund co-hosted an on-the-ground tour of restoration and monitoring activities taking place at Red Clover Valley. Our work at the Clover Valley Ranch is focused on innovative process-based restoration techniques including the installation of beaver dam analogues, incorporating traditional ecological knowledge of the local indigenous tribe into revegetation efforts, and conducting multi-disciplinary monitoring to evaluate the effectiveness of restoration on meadow health and function.
